Described as “a cultural factory for the 21st Century” and a “permanent work in progress,” this amazing facility was rescued from the dire fate of many old New England mill complexes, abandonment, neglect, the wrecking ball and ruin. It has been transformed into a huge, functioning artistic and cultural community, almost like some City of Learning from the Middle Ages.

After opening in the spring 1999, its goal has been to be a beacon of art and learning, a “multidisciplinary center for visual, performing and media arts,” with 27 interlinked buildings built in brick, wood and glass on 12 acres bounded by the rivers and scenery of the breathtaking Berkshires. There is be plenty of space (over 200,000 square feet) available for performance and exhibitions, as well as bistros, commercial office space and retail shops.

Just to give you a feel for the musical inclination for the summer performance series; “Shorts” by Philip Glass will be performed Friday July 13 & Saturday July 14. The Foundry Theatre Production will perform “And God Created Great Whales” Friday August 10 & Saturday August 11 and is a musical piece written and performed by Rinde Eckert and Directed by David Schweizer. There will be New Orleans Jazz Swing along with an enormous variety of performances happening every week.
